Data Breach

by Mojoe.net | Jan 21, 2014 | News

So another retailer was hacked, (Target’s Data Breach) compromised, infected with malware, phished or they forgot to secure their network. So what are you to do?

Well, I believe the answer is fairly simple. Setup another debt card using one of the recently created online banks; such as, Ally Bank, ING Direct, PerkStreet, or Connexus Credit Union. We will call this the “ONLINE ACCOUNT”. Use this account to shop online, pay your online bill payments, or shop at retailers that use the internet to process their credit card transactions(which is all of them now days). Only deposit money in this account for use with retailers in the cyber world and the real world. Setup or keep another account and we will call this the “REAL ACCOUNT” at a bank in the real world, this will be your main account that you actually use to have your money deposited in, make other check payments from, or use to mail checks for paying bills (If anyone even still mails checks to pay bills) make this account your primary account. Think of this as your firewall to protect your money. Do not share this account with anyone, do not use it for online purchases, do not use it for going out to eat, basically it just house your money. You can easily transfer money from this account to your online bank account and usually do not even have to pay a fee. Now you basically have a firewall between you and the cyber criminals of the world. That way if your “ONLINE ACCOUNT” information is stolen or compromised; you can destroy the account and setup a new one. Most of all of these online banks provide the banking service for no fee.

The great thing is if you have to destroy the online account; you can and start all over again without using your “REAL ACCOUNT”. This protects you and your money. It will not protect your identity or the information registered to the “ONLINE ACCOUNT” but it will prevent a cyber criminal from depleting your account or using your account to make purchases for you. And if this sounds like to much trouble and you do not want to setup a “ONLINE ACCOUNT” you can always go back to the paper standard of CASH money.

How many network and retailers have been compromised over the last 5 years? Who watches out for the public and all the information we share with retailers? I will discuss this in my next blog post. “Securing our Data”
