If you build a website, they’ll come, right?
Sorry, but the famous movie line, “If you build it, he will come,” doesn’t apply to websites. It may have worked in Field of Dreams, but it doesn’t work for businesses that want customers to find them online. Why? Because this is the real world, and there’s no magical experience that’ll draw people to your website. They will only come if you convince them they should, and it takes significant digital marketing effort to do that.
Over the last few years, I’ve noticed a trend among many business owners to try to build their entire business by themselves. A lot of them will take a stab at it, but never find it to be a fulfilling experience. They’ll struggle with marketing, design, and strategy, and spend way too much money trying to do something without learning the skills to do it well.
The problem is that businesses aren’t built around individuals anymore. You can’t just put any human being in charge and expect them to be able to execute their vision.
More often than not, people are behind the success of a company because they’re part of a larger group that works together.
But how can you build your business as a team? Should you choose to do it that way, should you look for capable individuals to join your team, or should you outsource everything? Let’s talk about this, and examine why different options work better for different businesses.
Start Small & Work Together
Consider what will work best for your business before you commit to hiring someone who could be doing it themselves. Now think about what kind of team size will give you optimal results. At one end of the spectrum, you’ll want to get together with fewer than ten people. You’ll be able to work at lightning speed, but you’ll be responsible for everything. This is how I built MyGiganticSite.com, and it’s how I like to build new WordPress sites.
On the other end of the spectrum, you can build a team large enough that you can work at your own pace and manage each other more effectively. With 25 or more team members on each project, you’ll have fewer time constraints on your overall process.
A Website Has the Power to be a Marketing Engine
Done correctly and backed by solid digital marketing strategies, a website is your strongest marketing tool. A successful website build involves experts who understand the interplay between a dozen business, marketing and digital disciplines — a team that will guide the entire process with a well-written strategy aimed squarely at your business goals.
To develop a marketing strategy that works for your business, you need to understand the solutions you need. Only then will you be able to choose personnel that can deliver results.
Doing it Alone = Do It Wrong
I’ve seen this happen over and over again. One person will create a website, upload a few pieces of content, and move on with their life. They don’t talk about their website, they don’t promote it, and they never answer questions about it. The one person that owns the website isn’t excited about it anymore, so no one else is either. And the website gets no traffic.
You can’t build a business, a brand, or a website alone – it takes a group of people to make it happen. However, not any group will work – you need experts, and experts need a plan.
Bringing in the Best from Around the World
If you look around the web for WordPress experts, there are thousands of people offering their services. Unfortunately, there’s no way you can know if they’re right for your team. You could end up with someone that has great skills but couldn’t care less about your business.
I’ve found that if you’re looking for builders, marketers, designers, strategists, and writers who are all on the same page about your business goals, then search for WordPress experts that already work together. You can find them at forums like WPBeginner or at WordPress.org groups.
By establishing a team of specialists on your project before you ever start building the website itself, you’ll be able to focus on what really matters: creating a customized solution for your business goals. All this means is that quality matters more than quantity.
The Benefits of Working Together
When one person takes on the responsibility of building a website, they may try to handle anything and everything. While it’s impressive when someone can take care of all aspects of a project by themselves, it rarely produces the best results. By working with a team, you’ll receive:
A stronger solution: More than one person can be working on one project at once. You can get feedback and ideas from other team members before making decisions. And you’ll have multiple sets of eyes checking your work for errors and missing information.

And you’ll have multiple sets of eyes checking your work for errors and missing information. More attention: Working as a team means you’ll receive more attention and care than if you’re doing it alone. If you choose to build your website with a team, each member will be responsible for bringing their unique skills to the project – and everyone will be motivated to succeed.
